El voluntario Alden Pyle llega a Saigón en el otoño de 1952, momento en el que la lucha de los vietnamitas por liberarse del yugo colonial francés se encuentra en su punto álgido. Entusiasmado con su misión de ayudar al pueblo vietnamita a través de su programa de ayuda económica y ansioso por conocer la situación del país de la mano de alguien más experimentado, Pyle se hace amigo de Thomas Fowler, corresponsal del London Times. Sin embargo, pronto se siente atraído por la joven amante vietnamita de Fowler, Phuong, una muchacha tan bella, exótica y misteriosa como la misma ciudad de Saigón. Los tres se ven envueltos en un tempestuoso triángulo amoroso que llevará a una serie de sorprendentes revelaciones y finalmente, al asesinato.

American aid worker Alden Pyle arrives in Saigon in the fall of 1952, at the height of the Vietnamese fight for independence from French colonial rule. Filled with zeal for his mission to help the people of Vietnam through his economic aid program and eager to learn the lay of the land from a more experienced hand, Pyle befriends London Times correspondent Thomas Fowler. Soon however, he finds himself smitten with Fowler's young Vietnamese mistress, Phuong, who is beautiful, exotic and mysterious as the city of Saigon itself. The three become swept up in a tempetuous love triangle that leads to a series of startling revelations and finally to murder.
